The Benedictine Eagles football team dropped their first game of the year 28-20 in double overtime against Concordia Wisconsin. This moves the Eagles’ record to 3-1, 1-1 in conference play.
When asked how the team will bounce back, sophomore Isaac Eshun said, “We’re gonna attack this week with a different mindset, being more physical and focused.”
The game was at a standstill until CUW scored with 4:06 left in the second quarter. The Eagles drove all the way down the field and quarterback, Jack Moses, connected with wide receiver, Jason Moore, for a 15-yard touchdown right as the halftime buzzer sounded to tie the game.
The Eagles were the first to score in the second half when Bruce Negil punched in a 5-yard run to make it 13-7 in favor of the Eagles. Both defenses stood strong until CUW tied the game with a touchdown but couldn’t connect on the extra point. No team was able to score with the remaining time in regulation, which caused the game to go into overtime. The Eagles started with the ball and only needed three plays to score. Moses’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Weglarz made it 20-13. CUW answered with a touchdown of their own to tie the game at 23 apiece. CUW started with the ball in double-overtime and scored in four plays, also getting the two-point conversion, making it 28-20 in favor of CUW. The Eagles drive started with a roughing-the-passer penalty that set them up at the 12-yard line, but Moses was sacked for a six-yard loss the very next play. The drive stalled out at the nine-yard line after Moses couldn’t connect with his receiver on fourth down, giving the Eagles their first loss of the season.
“We didn’t come into this game with the right energy like we had the past three games. We were lackadaisical and just going through the motions,” said Eshun.
The Eagles look to bounce back against Rockford University this Saturday at 1pm for Benedictine’s 2025 Homecoming tailgate game.
