I didn’t expect Illinois to be on the list of states with the best quality of life in 2025. I love it here, but let’s be honest, it’s not exactly known for its sunny outlook on taxes, politics, or potholes. That said, a new CNBC study just dropped, ranking the 10 best states for quality of life, and while we’re not on it (again), a couple of neighbors are… and it’s making me side-eye Zillow.

Why Illinois Missed the 2025 Quality of Life List

The list includes places like Vermont, Hawaii, and Washington, gorgeous, yes. Affordable? Ha. But let’s keep it closer to home.

What Makes a State Great for Quality of Life in 2025?

Here are a few states that beat us out:

  • Colorado (because, mountains)
  • Rhode Island (small but mighty, apparently)
  • Maine (lobster and lighthouses, who wouldn’t be chill?)

But two spots stood out for being just close enough to pack up and go, and maybe tempting if you’ve ever looked around Rockford and thought, “There’s got to be more than this.”

Midwest States That Outranked Illinois This Year

Coming in at #3 is Minnesota, with high marks for health care, clean air, and overall life satisfaction.

And right behind them at #4?

North Dakota scored major points for safety and community.

So if you’re dreaming of a fresh start that doesn’t involve an eight-hour flight or selling a kidney, these might be worth a look.
