Long-time incumbent U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-5th) is facing four primary challengers — and three Republican candidates are competing for a chance to face the winner in the November 2026 general election.

In the Journal-area, the 5th District includes most of Arlington Heights and parts of Park Ridge, Des Plaines, Palatine, Mount Prospect, Rosemont, Niles, Glenview, Rolling Meadows, Prospect Heights and Buffalo Grove. Quigley has represented the district since 2009.

All of his challengers come from Chicago. Three Democratic challengers — development specialist Matt Conroy, of Lincoln Park, researcher Ellen A. Corley and teacher Jonny Antonio Bishop, both of the Near North Side, have never run for an elected office before. Anthony Michael Tamez, of Albany Park, currently serves on the Chicago Police 17th District Council, a three-member elected body charged with improving relationships between community and police and also has a role in city-wide policing decisions.

On the Republican side, two candidates are no strangers to campaigning in 5th District. Business owner Tom Hanson, who ran against Quigley in every congressional election since 2018, is running for a fifth time. Psychiatrist Kimball Ladien ran for alderman in Chicago’s 47th Ward in 2019 and ran against Hanson in the 5th District Republican primary in 2020. Barry Wicker, of Chicago’s North Center neighborhood, is running for the first time.

None of the candidates face any objections to the nominating petitions, clearing them to advance to their respective primaries next March.
