Five masked suspects attempted a coordinated break-in of a vehicle in Mount Prospect early Tuesday (April 7) in what police described as a sophisticated burglary operation involving two getaway vehicles, armed lookouts, and a division of roles among the suspects.

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. at a home in the 1700 block of E. Camp McDonald Road. The victim discovered the attempted break-in when she went to her Chevrolet Camaro to leave for work and noticed items from the glovebox scattered on the floor and damage to the driver’s door lock mechanism.

Security camera footage, police said, shows two vehicles — a light-colored sedan and a dark-colored SUV — pull up in front of the home. Five masked people then exit the vehicles and approach the Camaro.

Two of the suspects, both armed with black handguns, positioned themselves as lookouts while two other suspects targeted the vehicle. The two armed suspects appeared to be standing guard, watching the street and surrounding area while their accomplices attempted to access the vehicle’s interior, police said.

All five suspects remained at the scene for only a short time before returning to their vehicles and driving away eastbound on Camp McDonald Road. The entire operation lasted just minutes, police noted.

According to police, nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle, but the interior of the driver’s door was damaged during the break-in attempt. Police did not specify whether the suspects were attempting to steal items from the glovebox or targeting the vehicle itself for theft.

Police describe the five suspects as possibly white, all wearing masks and dark clothing. Two suspects were armed with black handguns and appeared to serve as lookouts, according to police.

The first suspect was described wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black shoes, black gloves, black mask covering face. The second suspect was described wearing a dark-colored hoodie, black pants, black shoes. The third suspect was described wearing a gray-colored hoodie, dark pants, black gloves. The fourth suspect was described wearing a black jacket with hood, gray pants, white shoes, carrying a black handgun, and appeared to be acting as an armed lookout. The final suspect was described wearing a light green hoodie, dark pants, black mask, carrying a black handgun, and also appeared to be acting as an armed lookout.

Police said one of the involved vehicles appeared to be a light-colored sedan with an unknown make/model and unknown registration. The other vehicle appeared to be a dark-colored SUV with an unknown make/model and unknown registration.

Both vehicles fled eastbound on Camp McDonald Road following the incident.

The Mount Prospect Police Dept. continues to actively investigate the incident and will have an increased police presence in the area as a result.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call the Mount Prospect Police Department’s Investigations Section at 847-870-5654. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s website or by contacting Crimestoppers.

The Mount Prospect Police Dept. reminds residents not to confront anyone breaking into their vehicle, even if they witness the crime in progress. Police recommend getting to a safe location immediately and calling 911 to report the incident.
