Angel Reese’s WNBA team has lost one of it’s leaders and legends of the organization to a brutal season-ending injury as their brutal start to the 2025 campaign continues amid her poor numbers

Angel Reese has sent her support after Courtney Vandersloot was ruled out for the season with an ACL tear after her return to the team this offseason.

The point guard spent 11 years with the Chicago Sky from 2011 to 2022, bringing the organization its first ever WNBA championship while arguably being its most storied player in franchise history. She left for the New York Liberty in 2023, winning another championship alongside Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones while being their starting point guard, before agreeing to return to Chicago.

In the latter years of her career, Vandersloot added a much-needed veteran presence and ball-handling player for the offense to run through. But after playing only seven games, she suffered a knee injury which has now been revealed to be an ACL tear.

The Sky released a statement that read: “Courtney Vandersloot underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed a right torn anterior crucial ligament (ACL), an injury she sustained in the June 7th game against Indiana.

“Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season and undergo surgery to repair the injury. All of Skytown is behind you Sloot!”

In reaction to this, Reese posted a prayer emoji to social media, knowing that her team has lost one of it’s key players in what has already been a brutal start to the season.

Vandersloot had averaged 10.6 points and 5.3 assists per game at the age of 36, still looking like the team’s best point guard.

The injury to Vandersloot is likely to give Hailey Van Lith a bigger opportunity with the team, after the Sky drafted her in the first round of the 2025 class.

The Sky has just two wins to begin the season, with Paige Bueckers’ Dallas Wings being the only other team to have a worse record to begin the season.

Reese herself has struggled hugely on the offensive end, averaging just 9.1 points while shooting a miserable 30.9% from the field, with the majority of her shots coming under the basket – attempting just three shots from deep so far this season.

The Sky were dominated by an Indiana Fever team without Caitlin Clark over the weekend, with the superstar point guard missing out with a knee injury.

The Fever had Kelsey Mitchell and Aaliyah Boston step up in Clark’s place, while Reese scored just four points in the game. The power forward continues to dominate as a rebounder, though, with 12 in the game while averaging 12.3 on the season so far.
