Wheaton among 11 cities tied for 19th in Illinois BBB scam reports in July

Wheaton was one of 11 cities tied for 19th among 282 Illinois cities with at least one BBB Scam Tracker report in July 2026, logging four scam reports, according to Better Business Bureau.

That was up from two reports in the prior month.

Three reports listed losses totaling $336.86, and the most common scam type was online purchase, which accounted for two reports.

The largest reported loss for the month was $119.99 from an online purchase scam. The report described: Harry Potter lamp advertised on Facebook. It was a “preorder” so I expected a long time shipping. No response to emails, not delivery. Tracking number show Carrier received information>

BBB Scam Tracker allows consumers to search reported scams and share their own experiences to help others recognize similar schemes. The BBB says it reviews each report before publication and does not publicly display the reporter’s name or personal contact information.

Fraud reports have continued to show large financial losses nationwide. The Federal Trade Commission said consumers reported losing more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year.
