Streets Along Rand Road Will Be Closed For Water Main Installation – Journal & Topics
Written by Kathryn Sears

Reconstruction of the Rand Road bridge over the Des Plaines River in Des Plaines cuts the roadway from 4 lanes down to 2 on Friday, April 24, 2026. Several days of rain from the week prior left high standing water in pockets throughout the area. (Dion Martorano/Journal photo)

A number of Des Plaines properties will be impacted by overnight work to install a new water main under Rand Road.

On Friday, May 22, the water main was scheduled to be shut down from 4 to 8 p.m. to complete a connection between new and old water systems. Properties affected include:

Rand Road (Grove Avenue to Wilson Lane)

Elk Boulevard (Rand to North End)

Hawthorne Lane (Rand to Big Bend Drive)

Junior Terrace (Hawthorne Lane to South End)

Hawthorne Terrace (Hawthorne Lane to South End)

Sherwood Road (Hawthorne Lane to South End)

Big Bend Drive (Hawthorne Lane to South End)

From next Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, May 29, contractors will be working overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to install the water main across Rand Road at various locations. Traffic will be reduced to one lane, two-way traffic with flaggers.
