State Representative Nicole La Ha joined House Republican colleagues yesterday in the Capitol Blueroom to outline a legislative agenda focused on delivering meaningful property tax relief for Illinois families. The press conference emphasized the growing burden on homeowners and the urgent need for reforms that bring fairness, transparency, and predictability back into the system.

“Families across our communities are doing everything they can to stay afloat, and property taxes keep making that harder,” Rep. La Ha said. “In many cases, people are paying thousands of dollars each year just to remain in homes they worked their whole lives to afford.”

Data from the Cook County Treasurer’s Office shows a significant shift in the property tax burden in recent years, with nearly $2 billion moving onto homeowners over a three-year period. During that same time, business property tax bills decreased while residential bills climbed, intensifying the strain on working families.

Rep. La Ha also pointed to rising median tax bills across the region, including Cook County at roughly $6,300 and DuPage County exceeding $7,500 in many areas, alongside some of the highest effective property tax rates in the country.

“In some of the hardest-hit areas, families are falling behind,” Rep. La Ha said. “About one in ten homeowners have only been able to make partial payments on their tax bills. That tells you everything you need to know about where things stand right now.”

During the press conference, House Republicans outlined a series of proposals aimed at lowering property taxes, increasing transparency, and giving taxpayers a stronger voice in the process. These measures include reforms to improve notification of tax increases, require voter approval for certain tax hikes, and reinvest existing funds into property tax relief.

Rep. La Ha emphasized that any solution must be balanced and sustainable.

“We need a system families can understand and plan around,” Rep. La Ha said. “That means clear assessments, fair processes, and stability year after year. Relief for one group should never come at the expense of another.”

Rep. La Ha proudly serves the people of the 82nd District.
