Following First Appearance Court, Court orders defendant to be held pending State’s motion to revoke pre-trial release on a pending burglary/retail theft case

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Hinsdale Chief of Police Brian King announced today that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the State’s motion to deny pre-trial release for a Chicago man accused of leading officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen motor vehicle. Claude Miles, 28 (d.o.b. 4/12/1997) of the 5400 block of N. Kenmore Avenue, appeared in First Appearance Court this morning charged with two counts of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding (Class 4 Felony) and one count of Possession of Burglary Tools (Class 4 Felony).

On February 24, 2026, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a Hinsdale police officer on patrol allegedly observed a 2013 Ford Fiesta driving with no rear license plate. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren at the area of Ogden Avenue and Pasquinelli Drive to conduct a traffic stop. It is alleged that instead of stopping for the officer, the Ford, later determined to be driven by Miles, did not stop and instead fled from the officer ultimately reaching speeds of approximately 73 mph in a 35-mph zone. It is further alleged the Hinsdale officer deactivated his emergency lights and siren but continued to follow Miles from a distance as he continued driving. It is alleged that Miles drove through Downers Grove into Oak Brook where officers with the Oak Brook Police Department activated their emergency lights and siren and began pursuit in the area of 31st street. It is further alleged that during the pursuit, Miles drove through a red light at 31st street and Midwest Road where his tires were spiked. It is alleged that Miles then drove over the lane dividers and continued to drive on the opposite side of the road from 31st street and Regent Drive, crossing over Illinois Route 83. It is alleged that Miles turned onto Jorie Boulevard and continued to straddle the lane divider until he came to a stop near Jorie Plaza. He was taken into custody at this time without incident. When searching his vehicle, officers allegedly located a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Following further investigation officers learned that the 2013 Ford Fiesta had been reported as stolen out of Chicago on February 16, 2026. An investigation into this matter continues.

Following his appearance in First Appearance Court, Judge Dieden ordered the defendant to be held pending the State’s motion to revoke pre-trial release on a pending burglary/retail theft case, which will be heard tomorrow, February 25, 2026, in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

“The allegations that Mr. Miles was not only driving a stolen motor vehicle, but also reached speeds of nearly 75 mph in a 35-mph zone to avoid apprehension are disturbing,” Berlin said. “Judge Dieden’s order to detain Mr. Miles pre-trial sends a strong message that in DuPage County if you engage in this type of dangerous behavior that endangers the lives of the public and the officers involved, you will be caught and remain behind bars awaiting trial. I thank the Hinsdale Police Department for their efforts on this case and their ongoing commitment to keeping our streets safe. I thank the Downers Grove Police Department for their assistance and the Oak Brook Police Department for their work in safely apprehending the defendant in this case. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Anthony Raimondi and Jennifer Nielsen for their efforts in preparing a strong case against Mr. Miles.”

“The arrest was made possible due to an alert Hinsdale patrol officer and the coordination with our law enforcement partners,” King said. “Oak Brook officers reacquired the vehicle which allowed Hinsdale officers to successfully spike the car putting an end to the pursuit. We are grateful for the cooperation and coordination we received from the Downers Grove and Oak Brook Police Departments. We especially like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his staff for their attentiveness and commitment to law and order in DuPage County.”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
