Slushy snowing Sunday morning with possibly dangerous lake-effect conditions into Monday

CHICAGO (WLS) — On early Sunday morning, the Chicago area woke up to some snow flakes falling and overall wet driving conditions.

ABC7 meteorologists said a lake-effect band produced the early rain/snow mix on Sunday.

Most locations will see less than an inch of slushy coating on Sunday. Northwest Indiana could see one to three inches on Sunday mornng.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Lake County, Illinois from 9 p.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday until Monday at noon for Cook, eastern Will and Kankakee counties.

In Indiana, a Winter Storm Warning was in effect until 6 p.m. on Monday in Lake and Porter counties. Starke, Marshall, La Porte, St. Joseph and Berrien counties are under the warning until 6 p.m. Monday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for DuPage and Will counties from 9 p.m. Sunday until noon on Monday.

In Indiana, Newtown and Jasper counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 p.m. Monday.

ABC7 meteorologists have issued an AccuWeather Alert for Sunday night through Monday, as the possible snowfall could create dangerous travel conditions tonight and during the morning commute.

Sunday night into Monday morning, snow could fall at a rate of 3 to 5 inches per hour in some areas.

Light, on-and-off snow showers could linger through the afternoon hours Monday, said AccuWeather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez.

Chicago and Northwest Indiana could see 12+ inches of snow possible under intense lake-effect bands overnight into Monday.

Temperatures will take a dip into the 30s on Sunday, with gusty winds up to 35 mph making it feel like it is in the 20s.

No accumulation is expected during the daytime hours on Sunday. Although, there could be some slush on some grassy surfaces, but only if we see some heavier snow showers, said AccuWeather Meteorologist Larry Mowry.

Temperatures will drop into the 20s on Sunday night area wide.
