ALMAS committed to ‘building bridges’ with SECA funding
ALMAS (Alliance of Latinos Motivating Action in the Suburbs) welcomes transparency and accountability in all city processes, including the SECA (Special Events and Cultural Amenities) grant program. We appreciate Naperville City Councilman Josh McBroom’s interest in ensuring public funds are used responsibly and we are confident that every dollar awarded to ALMAS fully complies with SECA guidelines for nonpartisan community engagement.
The SECA funding we receive supports Naperville’s annual Día de Muertos: Celebrating Community and Life, which took place Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion. This free, family-friendly celebration brings together residents of all backgrounds to honor loved ones, celebrate culture and experience the beauty of Latino heritage in Naperville.
While recent public statements have sought to mischaracterize ALMAS and its leadership, we remain grounded in our mission and values. Integrity, transparency, and accountability guide every aspect of our work, including the responsible use of SECA funds that make community events like Día de Muertos possible. ALMAS stands firm in its commitment to collaboration and inclusion, and we are proud to uplift the Latino community in Naperville, a community whose voices, stories and contributions strengthen the very fabric of our city.
Our mission has always been to build bridges through cultural celebration, civic engagement, and partnerships that uplift all Naperville residents. We remain focused on creating spaces where every neighbor feels seen and included.
From Día de Muertos and mental-health forums to youth leadership initiatives, our programs bring together families, schools and local organizations in a spirit of learning and respect. By elevating Latino voices and fostering cross-cultural understanding, ALMAS helps create a more connected, compassionate and informed community for everyone.
We look forward to continuing to work in good faith with city leaders and community partners who share our belief in unity through culture, service, and understanding. We thank all residents who joined us Saturday for Día de Muertos: Celebrating Community and Life — a day of remembrance, joy and togetherness that reflects the very best of Naperville.
