A video circulating on Snapchat of a Benedictine student temporarily detained by Lisle Police Monday has generated discussion about the relation of race to the incident. In the video, the student, a black male, can be seen face down in the drive in front of Birck Hall in what appears to be handcuffs.
An anonymous student, on campus at around 8:55 p.m. the night of October 13th, reportedly witnessed Lisle officers extracting the student from the car, counting five officers at the scene in total.
“I think it was racially motivated,” stated the student witness. The witness also felt the officers were aggressive with their actions.
Deputy Chief Craig Gomorczak of the Lisle Police Department stated in an email to The Candor,
“Officers had been called about a vehicle driving slowly and erratically. In this situation, officers had to remove the subject because he was not complying with the officer’s request to exit the car. He was temporarily detained to ensure everyone’s safety and to assess the situation.”
“Lisle Police Drug Recognition Expert Sergeant Wise responded to the scene to evaluate the driver, and it was determined that the problem was related to a medical issue and not intoxication. A family member safely picked up the subject.”
Candor reporters Victoria Duszynski and Makenzie Carroll contributed to this story.
