West Chicago, IL – An Illinois woman has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for her role in the 2018 kidnapping and murder of an 18-year-old man, who was lured to a public library, attacked, and set on fire.
According to DuPage County prosecutors, Tia Brewer, 22, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in November 2023. She was 16 at the time but was charged as an adult.
Investigators said Brewer and three co-defendants planned the attack for a month before luring Luis Guerrero to the West Chicago Public Library. After strangling, stabbing, and beating him, they took him to a fire pit, doused him in gasoline, and set him on fire. Guerrero briefly escaped while burning but was recaptured, stabbed again, and thrown back into the flames.
Co-defendants Jesus Jurado-Correa and Saul Ruiz received 15- and 10-year sentences, while Francisco Alvarado, who also pleaded guilty, is awaiting sentencing in 2025.
Brewer must serve 34 years for murder at 100% and six years for kidnapping at 85%, with the sentences running consecutively.
